Mental health facility to improve access to care for refugee communities

AFOD Uganda (Alliance Forum for Development) has been at the forefront of supporting refugees and vulnerable communities in the West Nile region of Uganda through its various programs and projects. Recognizing the pressing need for mental health services among refugees, AFOD Uganda embarked on a significant endeavor to construct a first of its kind mental health rehabilitation facility in Adjumani.

On 11th November 2022, AFOD Uganda launched its fundraising campaign for constructing the first of its kind mental health rehabilitation facility in Adjumani district to offer psychosocial support to the refugees and neighboring communities. The facility is intended to offer both psychosocial support and economic empowerment training for those that have recovered for safe integration into their communities. This effort is still ongoing as we continue to fundraise for this Rehab facility.

In this blog, we explore AFOD Uganda’s efforts to establish this facility, the benefits it will provide, and its potential to positively impact the mental well-being of refugees.

Addressing the Mental Health Gap

Comprehensive care: AFOD Uganda acknowledges that refugees often face immense psychological challenges due to forced displacement, traumatic experiences, and the uncertainties of their circumstances. By constructing a mental health rehabilitation facility, we aim to fill the existing gap in mental health services specifically tailored to the needs of refugees. This facility will offer comprehensive care, including counselling, therapy, psychiatric support, and psychosocial rehabilitation as well soft skills empowerment to those that recover.

Accessibility and Proximity: The facility’s strategic location within or near refugee settlements ensures accessibility for refugees who may face logistical barriers to accessing mental health services. By providing care within close proximity, we ensure that refugees can easily seek help, reducing the burden of traveling to Kampala “Butabika Hospital” and increasing the likelihood of engagement with mental health professionals.

Culturally Sensitive Approach: We understand the importance of cultural sensitivity when addressing mental health among refugees. The mental health rehabilitation facility will be staffed by professionals trained in trauma-informed care and culturally appropriate interventions. This approach fosters trust, understanding, and a safe space for refugees and host communities to share their experiences, promoting effective healing and recovery.

Benefits of the Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility

Holistic Treatment: The facility will offer a holistic approach to mental health rehabilitation, addressing the diverse needs of refugees. Services will encompass individual and group therapy, psychosocial support, psychoeducation, and creative therapeutic activities. This comprehensive approach will help individuals heal, develop coping strategies, and build resilience, contributing to their overall well-being.

Capacity Building: In addition to direct services, the mental health rehabilitation facility will provide training and capacity-building programs for local mental health professionals. By enhancing their skills and knowledge, we aim to create a sustainable support system capable of addressing the long-term mental health needs of refugees in Uganda. This investment in local capacity will have a lasting impact on mental health services beyond the facility.

Community Integration: The facility will play a vital role in promoting community integration for refugees. It will serve as a hub for community events, workshops, and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Through these initiatives, we will foster community support, understanding, and acceptance, creating an environment that values and supports mental well-being.

Fundraising and Collaboration

To bring the mental health rehabilitation facility to fruition, AFOD Uganda actively engages in fundraising efforts and seeks partnerships with local and international organizations, governments, and donors. Through collaborative efforts, AFOD Uganda aims to secure the necessary resources, expertise, and financial support to construct and sustain the facility.
